Weekly Photo #5: Water

I should have taken a picture of the rig I set up to do these shots. I used an aluminum lasagna pan with a pool of water in it to catch the water droplets. Then I hung a plastic bag filled with water above it by clamping the bag to a piece of spare wood that was secured to a wooden stool.

I had the camera on a tripod and set to Manual mode. After pricking the bag of water, I focused the camera on the spot the water was landing by placing a knife in the spot and auto-focusing. Then I switched the lens to manual focus mode and also disabled image-stabilization. I would have liked to have a speed-light to do this, but I had to settle for my camera’s built in flash.

Once I was done, I fiddled with the white-balance to add the blue tint.

Weekly Photo #4: Panning

After a one-week break, we took on the task of doing a panning shot at the A&J Project. I had another extremely busy week, so I had to get creative. For my shot I took one of our dog’s toys and tied it to my iPhone with some twine. Then I spun around taking pictures of it until I was dizzy.

This week’s A&J Project assignment was Stairs. In my search for photogenic stairs I ended up at George Brown College near Casa Loma.

This week’s A&J Project assignment was tree bark. I found a tree in Eglinton Park that was peeling half-pipes of bark off of itself.

A couple of shutterbug friends of mine and I have decided to start giving ourselves weekly photography assignments. Our first assignment was freighter boats. You can see all of our results in a flickr group called The A&J Project.
